Composing is a practice of manifestation. Philip Glass once said he listens for the ghost river and tries to reveal it on this side. When something is trying to break through, I’m grateful to help reveal it. But I’m not the end of the process. As you listen, you interpret, and what the music expresses is ultimately both collective and individual.
For two decades I’ve worked in journalism. I’m Executive Director of Next City and the host of its podcast. I am a two-time NLGJA LGBTQ Journalist of the Year, and a three-time winner of the Society of Professional Journalists’ national Sigma Delta Chi award. Being a journalist makes me a better composer.
I often say that a narrative is like the music that’s been playing in the room before we got there. To write music is to become the narrative, letting us feel what’s happening even before the scene begins.
